Naval Aviation Museum

Roamy here.  Hopefully this isn’t like getting snared into having to watch your neighbor’s vacation slides.  Today’s museum is the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola.  The Naval Air Station at Pensacola is home to the Blue Angels, and once I get better at creating movie files, I’ll post some of the practice show.  Until then…

The fascinating part for me was seeing the ongoing restoration effort.  My dad brought me to this museum when I was 15 or 16, and to come back after (mumble) years was a great experience.  I can appreciate this a whole lot more.

Beechcraft Twin Beech (probably a C-45J, but maybe an SNB)

Lots of planes outside.

Front to back: C-1A, TF-9J, E-1B, RA-5C, EKA-3B, A-7E, RF-8G

They expanded the museum some years ago, and now there’s a mockup of a flight deck.

Vought F4U Corsair (or more likely, a Goodyear FG-1D)
Brewster SB2A Buccaneer

An A-6 Intruder for XBradTC.

Thanks to XBradTC for captioning these pics for me; my memory’s not as good as it used to be.  There was also a Top Gun simulator that cost extra, but my kids really enjoyed it.  As Andy said, the next time you’re in the vicinity of the Redneck Riviera, take a look.

  1. This is almost better than Load HEAT. Almost. I never get bored looking at this sort of thing.

Next time you’re in that neck of the woods, though, any chance you could stop by USS ALABAMA? I don’t even care what you take pictures of, so long as it’s grey and there’s lots of pictures. 🙂

(Speaking of which … Brad, when’s the next one? You’re slacking!)

    1. Dude, the last Load HEAT just went up Monday at 6am. You know, like every week?

As for pics from P’Cola, Roamy tells me she has a couple dozen, and we’ll parcel ’em out.

    2. Hey, it’s been a long goddamned week, Brad. Long goddamned week.

Any chance of a special Thursday edition? 😀

[Not from me. If Roamy or Craig take pity on you, that’s another matter…XBradTC]

  2. Excellent museum. Got to go to it a couple years back when I was in Mobile, AL for a few months. Last time I had been there was a high school field trip. I really liked the A4 Blue Angel formation display hanging in the gallery. Went to the USS Alabama museum, also.
Another interesting place to visit down there is the Ft. Blakely Civil War Battlefield.

    1. That high school trip was the last time I went. It’s been on my “to do” list for a long, long time, but I haven’t had any excuse to head to FL or south AL in a long time.
