The Marines are pounding the heck out of someone. And you’ll notice it takes a looooong time for the rounds to reach their target. The caption describes this as a “massive fire mission” and that it is.

Makes me think of teardrops from hell. With all that I suppose the area hit would be powdered.
Aaron, it was a DPICM mission, with each round expelling 72 submunitions on the target. Figure there’s 24 guns in a battalion, each firing six rounds, that’s 72 rounds, for a total of 5184 submunitions. Now, if it truly was a regimental mission, that’s three battalions, 72 guns, six rounds each for a total of 15,552 grenades. So, yeah, that’s some hurt on the target.
I don’t know where they landed. But I’m glad I wasn’t there.
I saw a battalion 6 of 8″ impact about 2000 yards in front of my position. I just about shit my pants.
