PBR at Patriots Point

On Roamy’s post on the USS Alabama, Elsi mentioned the PBR on display at Patriots Point, SC earlier today.  Well, I went to the vault…

Here’s a view of the forward gun position, made famous by “Lance” in Apocalypse Now.

And the rear station, just a .50-cal in this case.

The center piece of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is of course the USS Yorktown.

And the USS Clamagore (SS-343) remains docked beside the carrier.

At one time, Patriots Point hosted a significant “fleet” of historic vessels.  In recent years the USS Laffey (DD-724) moved to the old Charleston Navy Yard and is undergoing restoration there.  The Coast Guard moved the USCGC Ingham (WHEC-35) to Key West.  And the nuclear cargo-passenger ship NS Savannah moved to Baltimore.

But over 25 aircraft remain on display.  Some interesting and rare types, like the E-1B Tracer.

And of course for us inclined to the “Civil War” topics, a ferry departs for Fort Sumter from the dock next to the Yorktown.
