Protesting the Air and Space Museum?

Craig here.

From the Washington Post:

The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum on the Mall was abruptly closed Saturday afternoon after a “large group of protesters” tried to push past security guards and enter the museum, a spokeswoman said.

At least one demonstrator was pepper-sprayed by a museum guard in the confrontation, said Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas. Several witnesses said that more than a dozen people were affected by the spray.

The museum was closed at about 3:15 p.m., St. Thomas said.

The article goes on to say that 200 protesters were demonstrating against a display of drones and unmanned vehicles inside the museum.  The group takes issue with the recent use of drone strikes aimed at terrorist targets.

Personally I think the protest at the Air and Space Museum takes a step beyond simple civil discourse.  Consider that thousands of families planned day trips and vacations which included a stop at “the most visited” museum in Washington.  In the past, I’ve seen protesters on the steps of the museum but they were not disruptive.  The actions yesterday shut down one of the most popular tourist attractions and impacted the plans of innocent bystanders.  All because someone wanted to shove a banner in front of the drone display.

On Friday my trip to and from work required me to pass near the protests occurring in front of the White House (Brad is complaining about my posting cycles here… look, blame my lagging production on the protesters!).  As a “beltway worker” I’ve witnessed the crowds attending the war protest of Jaunary 2007, the Tea Party rallies, and other similar political events.  I think I’ve got a good sampling of events to compare against the “Occupy” protesters.  There’s just no similarity between the Tea Party folks and the “Occupy” protesters.   Those that are trying to draw a parallel are not making such comparisons from the street view.
