TSO sends us the following press release from the White House;
On September 15, 2014, President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to Army Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins and to Army Specialist Four Donald P. Sloat for conspicuous gallantry.
I don’t know why, but Democrat presidencies seem to have a greater affinity for looking through past records to find potential Medals of Honor to award.
In the case of Cushing, there has been a long campaign on his behalf. I don’t agree with it. What he did on July 3, 1863 was one of the bravest acts a soldier can do. But his contemporaries did not feel it stood above the acts by others on the same field. Awarding the MoH to him now leaves us to judge – not only Cushing, but his contemporaries. I could fill this page and then some listing the men who fought at Gettysburg who performed acts worthy of a MoH consideration. And I’m certain over the 151 years since that event, we could find several more pages. But we don’t pass out MoHs like AAMs.
Obama probably got told that Cushing was black.
When Clinton did it, I got the feeling that it was more to correct past injustices. When the current administration does it, feel like they using it to say “see, we do like the military” when they really don’t.
Bingo!
Compared to the number of recipients of the Victoria Cross…
