The United States is reviving a law enforcement group to investigate those it designates as domestic terrorists, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.
Following hate-motivated shootings such as the one at a Jewish Community Center in Kansas City, Missouri in April, federal prosecutors have pressed the need to coordinate intelligence about such criminals on a national level, Justice Department officials said.
The Department of Justice will reconstitute a task force that was originally formed after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing but dissolved after the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks as law enforcement agencies focused on threats from militants abroad.
It’s a damn shame the Obama administration has so politicized virtually every aspect of the federal bureaucracy to the point that my first thought is that this task force is designed not to prevent terrorism, but rather to generate leaks useful to smear conservative people and groups.
Here’s the thing about domestic terrorism. Virtually every act of it has been by “lone wolf” types, or at most two or three people. These individuals or tiny cells are virtually undetectable. And this coordinating committee is powerless to actually prevent any domestic terrorism unless and until any genuine threat is noticed by the first line of defense, local law enforcement. And if local law enforcement actually does detect (genuine) potential threats, they already have the ability to use either their own resources, or local FBI counter-terrorism assets to investigate and prosecute.
One is left wondering just what this task force’s real purpose is, if not to attempt to stoke fears among the left and the middle of the Tea Party and other conservative groups.
