Memorial Day Weekend

And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.

-Joseph Rodman Drake

Someone will, this weekend, thank me for my service. And normally, I appreciate that. But not this weekend. My day is in November.

Monday, the last Monday in May, we will observe Memorial Day in honor of those Americans who not only answered the call to service, but fulfilled their duty with the last full measure of devotion.

Enjoy your BBQ, and pool or beach. Spend time with family and friends. Laugh, hug, bask in the warm spring sun.

Because they no longer can, and it is through you and your memory of them that they shall live forever.

  1. I had a great start to the Memorial Day weekend by attending a book signing with Buzz Aldrin! He spoke for about an hour then signed books for the ~380 folks that were waiting. I was pleased to note that the ages of the folks were all over place – lots of 20 somethings as well as the expected mid-40s and older crowd which I thought would be dominant.

It was an honor and a blast to meet a true American legend, and a guy that isn’t shy about stating what he believes. And yes, I will forever now claim that I “met him”, as I was within three feet of him and we exchanged pleasantries.

Hope everyone else has as pleasant a weekend.

  2. Indeed. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it was a very polite, hero-worshipping crowd. I love watching that video of him slugging that moron. Good stuff.
