Mormon and military

I ordinarily would not give Whoopi Goldberg any space here, but after she said on “The View” that Mormons aren’t allowed to serve in the military, I figured it would be a good thing to set the record straight.

Allahpundit at HotAir points to this article on the 18,000+ Mormons in military service, particularly the Utah National Guard. The article also touches on the allowances made by the service academies for missionary service. In short, they are allowed to resign from the service academy after their sophomore year then re-apply after their missionary service is complete.

“In many ways, going on an LDS mission is a benefit to the cadet,” Van Winkle [of the Air Force Academy’s Public Affairs office] said. “When he returns to the Academy, he’s had greater life experience, seen a little bit more of the world, increased his communication skills, matured and is fully committed to returning as a cadet to the Air Force Academy by making the choice to return.”

Possibly Whoopi confused Mormons with Quakers, though President Nixon was a Quaker and served in the Navy during WW2. Or, more likely, she just wanted to slam Mitt Romney for lack of service, as if Obama had any to brag about.

  1. Mitt Romney is a Mormon.
    Whoopi is a Moron.

It sounds similar, but that extra “m” makes a lot of difference.

    1. I don’t know, URR … my ex-wife manages to combine the two in a most satisfactory fashion when that church is handing out free stuff.

At other times, though, she doesn’t much bother with the second M.

  2. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not supposed to serve in the military or even recite the pledge of allegiance. I wouldn’t expect Whoopi, however, to be a well informed individual given what I have seen of her.

  3. I watched that show….Behar, and Goldberg looked as someone waiting to pounce. Expected better research from the show to know Mormons are not “anti-military”. Walters was trying her best to get Mrs. Romney to drop a morsel they could jump on. Ann did a pretty good job in my opinion.

  4. What Whoopi did was disgusting and vile. Its just as bad when people used to slam the Quakers for their beliefs, or the Jews for being Jews. She should be ashamed of herself. That was not an innocent question.

  5. What bothers me is when people of color, specifically black people, attack white people with racists comments. Do they not remember a mere 60 years ago when white people, like Romneys father stood side by side with blacks to gain them equal standing? Don’t they understand that when they do this, they are as evil as Jim Crow?

  6. Looks like Household 6 steered me wrong. If Whoopi had only let me know, I would have found something else to do with my life since 1986.

    1. HAHAHAHAHA!

Next time you will remember to look in Hollywood for your life coaches! I hear Charlie Sheen and Britney Spears are free agents!

  7. had a Mormon roommate at the Academy. nice guy.

had a Mormon Plt SGT in my tank company. fantastic guy.

had a Mormon LT in my cav troop. another nice guy.

had a Mormon classmate in CAS3. great guy.

knew a couple others throughout my career. every single one of them was at WORST a real nice guy. many of them were really really great officers.
granted, it’s a limited sample. but i’ve never had cause to ever have anything bad at all about ANY of them…

    1. At this point, it is obligatory to remind teh crowd that Dingy Harry Reid is a Mormon. Most are nice people, but there a number of scumbags in the pile as well.
