Falcon 9 launch

I’d lose my space card if I didn’t post the launch of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 early this morning.  Go, baby, go!

It’s a resupply mission to the International Space Station, with the Dragon capsule carrying 1,200 pounds of food, water, clothes and supplies. On the second stage were the ashes of James Doohan, Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper and 306 other people, so they have now reached orbit. I’d love to know just how many people were inspired by “Scotty” to become engineers. I had the poster “Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From Star Trek” hanging in my office for a while. James Lileks had this great eulogy.

No one wanted to go into space because of that whiny little red-head kid on Lost in Space. It takes something indefinable to be a Kirk, it takes med school to be a McCoy, it takes green blood to be Spock, but Scotty – aye. Any man could be Scotty, if he applied himself. And he’d be among manly things, too.

Of course, how sad it is that everyone remembers Scotty but not Gordo?

The Dragon capsule will rendezvous with ISS on Thursday.
