  1. Sweet. The first aircraft model I ever built was an F-104G when I was probably 7 or 8. Always had a soft spot for these guys.

  2. Trying to tie the record for low altitude flight. You can always count on some European air force to give us awesome pics of people in jets trying to kill themselves. 🙂

  3. The Germans called them Flying Coffins for good reason. My youngest brother was injured on the school bus and he was rushed to Landshtul Hospital near Ramstein AFB, and although he was in agony a 104 pilot involved in a fiery crash got bumped ahead of him in the emergency room. I can’t remember if he was an American or German pilot. The safety record of the things wasn’t good, to be charitable.

  4. On Reforger 1982 had a flight of 4 Luftwaffe F-104s roar over our company. They had to pull up HARD to clear the high tension lines ahead. Incredible how low they were. I remember distinctly they had dayglo orange or yellow panels on each wingtip tank….and then I ducked from the storm of gravel and dust blasting us.

  5. QM, from my general reading, they were less unsafe than unforgiving of new pilots, or those lacking experience in the Starfighter.

IIRC, the B-26 Marauder was similarly high-performance & challenging.
