The USS Franklin

Today marks the anniversary of the saga of the USS Franklin. Maybe CDR Sal will have her on Fullbore Friday?

  1. When I went through Boot Camp and Damage Control/Fire Fighting School in the fleet, they showed a flick about the Franklin fire. It didn’t tell some of the story in those clips, but it concentrated on the actual fight against the fire and subsequent damage control required. The point was made that Wasp went down early in the war with far less damage than Franklin sustained. The Navy learned some hard lessons in ’42-’43.

It’s mildly amusing that the movie starts as a War Department movie, but ends with the Navy Department logo.
