BBC News – US soldier kills Afghan civilians in Kandahar

A US soldier in Afghanistan has killed at least 16 civilians and wounded five after entering their homes in Kandahar province, senior local officials say.

He left his military base in the early hours of the morning and opened fire in at least two homes; women and children were among the dead.

Nato said it was investigating the “deeply regrettable incident”.

Anti-US sentiment is already high in Afghanistan after US soldiers burnt copies of the Koran last month.

US officials have apologised repeatedly for the incident at a Nato base in Kabul, but they failed to quell a series of protests and attacks that killed at least 30 people and six US troops.

  1. I heard this same story on CNN. I hate to be picking nits, but these nits, need picking. They had a reporter talking with a public affairs person at ISAF on this situation. The person from ISAF Public Affairs, took great care to explain that this was an ongoing investigation, therefore, he did not have all of the information. It was the Military position that civilians had been wounded, but there were no casualties. At the end of the report on CNN, the reporter in her conclusion talked about many casualties. I know these situations are tragic, but don’t make them anymore then they are, until they are confirmed. This is real bed timing for speculation!

  2. Sorry, about the typos. The last 2 sentences should read like this. “I know these situations are tragic, but don’t make them any more tragic, then they are, until they are confirmed. This is real bad timing for speculation!”

Note: Both BBC and CNN appear to be speculating on this events.
