Speaking of paratroopers…

I just walked out side and saw this overhead:

Douglas C-53 Skytrooper

That’s a Douglas C-53 Skytrooper.

Basically a C-47 optimized for carrying troops, with cargo handling facilities removed, Douglas built 380 for service with the Army Air Forces. Because the C-47 could perform its role as well, production was shifted to the basic C-47. The C-47 was the primary troop carrier for paratroops during World War II.

How can I tell the plane I saw overhead was a C-53 and not just a C-47?

I cheated. I’ve seen that particular plane at several airshows. One of the nice things about where I live is the proximity to a very nice collection of warbirds. I see quite a few of them flying by from time to time.

    1. Dad spent a couple years driving an R4D-8 SuperGooney around the Med, very often with a Chief NAP as his copilot (who, initially was the AC, and qual’d him on the bird).
