The SM-3 missile system is probably one of America`s secrets that no one (in my opinion) should have … even our allies. It plays a crucial role in the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, and it has a proven and successful track record.
Ugh. Look, he’s the President. He gets the final say on what’s classified, and how. So despite any language in the defense authorization, he’s got a right to disclose that information.
Having said that, any information shared with Russia will almost instantly be in the public domain. How damaging that would be to our security, I don’t know. But I suspect it won’t be good.
The SM-3 is the most effective arrow in our BMD quiver right now. Why give anyone information that may allow them to develop countermeasures?
Russia is a fading, failing power. Caving to them in a diplomatic maneuver is stupid. Their only real power these days is in manipulation gas supplies to other nations, and with the boom in gas exploration and exploitation, that power is rapidly waning. Screw ’em.
Of course, it’s not like this administration has a great record on deep strategic thinking…
