The Navy’s newest aircraft carrier has a messy problem. Since deploying in May, the Norfolk, Va.-based carrier George H.W. Bush has grappled with widespread toilet outages, at times rendering the entire ship without a single working head.

  1. Good thing this wasn’t posted on the Huffington Post. That the GHW Bush is “without a single working head” would be far too amusing for them!

  2. It’s normally a vacuum system with a macerator to chop “brown necked supper trout” up. Traditionally, tampons clog the system near the macerator, and the system backs up. “Education rather than repair” is the key phrase. The real issue is not engineering design, but gender-specific cultural training.

To be fair, some louts onboard would very occasionally put clothing and even other objects in the system. The overworked Hull Technicians (or A-gangers in general) were not amused.

  3. Two words: “Muffin Monsters”. Those puppies will grind up 2×4 lumber, much less ‘dead mice’.

  4. That is too funny, we’ve been on deployment with the Bush, and that’s not all that’s wrong. We have often been accused of our systems not working because how could a brand-new ship possibly have anything wrong with it?
