Most combat troops in Iraq and Afghanistan live in the same miserable conditions that grunts have always lived in. But on the larger outposts, the Army has been able to build quite comfortable quarters in standardized ISO container dimensions. Known as CHUs or Containerized Housing Units, for the first time, Army units forward deployed no longer have to live under canvas or in commandeered local buildings. Air conditioning, electric lighting, and running water combine to make very comfortable quarters.
While CHUs are purpose built and shipped to the theater, you could just take a couple of surplus 40′ containers and build your own housing…
