We’ve been highly critical of most aspects of the Marines policies regarding procurement of aviation assets. The one program we’ve been supportive of has been the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter. The -K is an evolutionary development of a series of helicopters that have been in Marine (and Navy and Air Force) service since the mid-1960s.
The CH-53K is larger and more powerful than its predecessor, the CH-53E, which is currently the largest helicopter in the Western World. It is due to enter service right about the time the older -E models reach the end of their service lives.
