Home away from home

Even in a war, there’s a good deal of time to relax. Not surprisingly, a lot of today’s soldiers use personal electronics to help with that. Today’s soldier would no more consider deploying to Afghanistan without a laptop as my generation would have deployed without foot-powder.

Danger Room has a great photo essay on the troops and their personal electronics:

  1. My son took his laptop to Iraq back in 2003. One guy in his unit turned on his wireless card while they were at Ft. Bragg getting ready to deploy and got a visit from the MPs within 10 minutes telling him to turn it off. He sent a pic of the trailer he and another SSG shared and it was loaded with electronics and books (he was in Engineering School when he was activated). My dorm room at Engineering school was neater to boot.
