Polls, as it were…

So, I checked the results of our last poll, and the consensus was that lots of folks want more posts on hardware.

OK. Fine. Happy to do it.

Leave a comment. What hardware would you like to see covered? Name a piece of equipment and I’ll do my best.

  1. The “ONTOS.” How did the Marines regard it’s effectiveness?
And what supposedly replaced it’s capabilities?

  2. I really already knew what the Marines in Vietnam thought of the Ontos, I should really have asked about what the attitude of the “big kids” in the Corp were towards it, or was it a bean-counting budgetary deal that led to it’s demise? And if not budget driven, what were the internal politics of it all, if any, i.e was it basically a doctrinal difference over tactics, or a mixture of everything?

  3. I’d like to see something on the ACU and the expected replacements. The army is again looking at newer ACU’s and possibly mulitcam due to the (grits teeth) “limited success” in Afghanistan and Iraq that the ACU’s had.

*sigh* Yet another uniform for the joes to have to buy out of our own pocket.

Funny you should mention Patriot Brad. I’m doing write-ups on anti-missile systems, I’ll get to Patriot and Thaad soon. I just finished HAWK.

A second battery of THAAD wil stand up soon so I’m gonna write about that to.

I realize the TOW was a lot cheaper, more easily deployable over a wider range of platforms, etc., and a better anti-tank wpn, but it seems the ONTOS was used primarily as an organic assault wpn and anti-personnel wpn during it’s tenure (few tanks to fight would explain a lot). Do the Marines miss it much at all for that capability?

  5. Predator and Javelin have been used with much success in Iraq and A’stan. The Javelin’s sights in particular have proven to be very useful by themselves. Their superior field of view and IR capabilities put them in much demand in Iraq.

Yeah, the bold ONTOS wasn’t exactly known for it’s superb IR capability, was it? 🙂 And the Javelin & TOW are easier to support and transport logistically, plus may be used on multiple wpns platforms as well as fired individually in case of Javelin, right?
