Inside Special Forces

We’ll get around to giving a more in-depth explication of the Army’s Special Warfare community, but I just found this excellent National Geographic special on Hulu and thought I’d share it with you.

This movie is a few years old, but is still an interesting look at the operations of a Special Forces detachment.

  1. I just got around to watching the unit on my Tivo.
I know that is Delta, Is Delta Army?
can you explain the hierarchy of SF?
Ranger, Green Beret? Delta? Seal? What is the Air Force? I have a but that retired after 23 years in AF special forces. If you know please prioritize.

  2. That’s a whole post on its own, and rather complex, but the gist of it is that each service has its own special operations forces. Those forces work for SOCOM, the Special Operations Command, which in effect, is its own branch of service. It’s a complex relationship, more than I can answer here.

Delta is different. They come from the Army, and are nominally part of SOCOM, but can either work directly for the SECDEF, or be parceled out to one of the regional theatre commanders.
