  1. Pinto, it is called a clearing turn. Birds shot off the bow catapults turn to starboard, and planes of the waist cats turn to port. Basically, since another plane is coming right behind, they want the airspace cleared. It dates all the way back to days of props when they needed the planes to move so the prop wash wasn’t coming back down the deck.
