Living in Germany

My first post in Germany was at Storck Barracks, Illesheim. It was in a beautiful part of Bavaria. It was also the smallest military post I’d ever seen. Here’s almost the whole post, and the entire village of Illesheim.

When I was there, it was a weird setup, in that we were an Infantry battalion on a post with an Aviation Brigade. We belonged to the 1st Armored Division, while the 11th Avn BDE belonged to VII Corps. But for things like court martials, we fell under the aviators. Our barracks were the three long buildings on the left. To get to the main part of the post with the PX and the snack bar, or go out the gate to hit the town, we had to cross the small tarmac just above the barracks. No big deal. Except coming home a little tipsy from the local tavern… Apaches, Blackhawk and Kiowa helicopters would be running up on the tarmac. At night, you can’t see the tail rotors, but you CAN walk into them. I don’t know how many of us were saved by a crew chief tackling us moments before making a spectacular exit from this life, but I know it was more than one.

  1. hey, when were you at Stork? Sounds like the same time I was – I was part of 2/6 cav – the first wave of aviation when 1/6 inf. wa still there. Great times – The stab and jab, etc…

  2. Heh. I’d forgotten we called it the “Stab & Jab”…

I was there from the middle of 89 ’til 1-6IN moved to Vilseck.

  3. I was there from 70 to 72. A Co. 2/51 Infantry. Lived in the center of the 3 barracks, adjacent to the tennis courts. The large tarmac hadn’t been built yet, only 1 landing strip. There was also an armor unit, 4/35. I was a mechanic (M113A1’s) in 2/51. We would frequent the” Green Tree” restaurant in Bad Windsheim for foosball & schnitzel.

  4. I was there 1961-1964–Co. A 66 Armor- 2med tk battilion. We were all there was ,but a small bunch A.F. fellows- maybe 20 men. Good menories !!!

  5. Thank you for sharing your picture….Husband/our Family was stationed there from 1992-1995. Loved living there, both on base and in this part of Germany…hope to go back someday!!!

    1. It was a nice little community. The barracks were pretty terrible when I was there, but such a small base and town, in such a lovely area…

I had a great time there and was sad to move to Vilseck.

  6. I was stationed at Storck barracks from ’93-’97 as a part of 2/6 Cav. I loved living there, and that part of Germany was beautiful.

    1. I may or may not have had a few drunken nights partying with folks from 2/6 CAV.

And that really was some of the prettiest countryside around.
